TerrierBlog Predictions Reviewed

It’s hard to go back to the innocent times of summer 2018 when we were all brightly optimistic about Town’s upcoming season. We were all high on the dramatic relegation escape of the previous campaign and the future looked bright, the future looked blue & white.

In those heady days John, Steph and Daniel from TerrierBlog donned their Mystic Meg outfits as they made their predictions for the season. Let’s take a look back and see who made the best (least crap) predictions…

Premier League Winners – Manchester City

John – Manchester City

Steph – Manchester City

Daniel – Manchester City

A clean sweep for the TerrierBlog team with all 3 predictors foreseeing Manchester City’s successful defence of their Premier League crown. The fact that City were heavy favourites at the time in no way diminishes the success of these predictions…

Top Four – Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham

John – Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United

Steph – Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United

Daniel – Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham

It seems as though both John and Steph fell for the Unai Emery narrative in pre-season with the Spanish coach being described by the media as the perfect man to improve on the wreckage left by Arsene Wenger!

Daniel didn’t fall for any of that guff though as he managed to make the best predictions, only slightly overestimating the performances of Manchester United.

Surprise Package (Burnley Award) – Wolves

John – West Ham

Steph – Huddersfield Town

Daniel – Huddersfield Town

Rumour has it that Steph and Daniel had been ingesting hallucinogenic drugs at the time of these predictions. That can be the only logical explanation for them picking Town to grab a European place.

John wasn’t too far off but it seems so obvious now, why did no one say Wolves!?

Town’s Final Position – 20th

John – 17th

Steph – 10th

Daniel – 13th

Okay this one was a bit of a hospital pass, no one was going to go all out and say Town would finish in the bottom three. John came the closest with his prediction of 17th with both Steph and Daniel electing for wildly optimistic predictions.

Relegated Teams – Cardiff, Fulham and that other team…

John – Watford, Bournemouth, Cardiff

Steph – Brighton, West Ham, Cardiff

Daniel – Leicester City, Fulham, Cardiff

Everyone plumped for Cardiff which is nothing special really, they were everyone’s favourites to go down. The fact that they took it to the penultimate game of the season was an achievement in itself.

The worst predictions for relegation? Bournemouth, Watford, West Ham and Leicester? What were they thinking? Despite tipping the Foxes for relegation Daniel came out on top again with 2 of his 3 tips going down.

Promoted Teams – Norwich City, Sheffield United, Aston Villa

John – West Brom, Swansea, Leeds

Steph – Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United, Leeds

Daniel – Leeds, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough

Well, well, well. All of the TerrierBlog team seemed to think Bielsa would have enough to get Leeds over the line, but none of them factored in the ‘bottler’ effect that has plagued Leeds for decades.

John was the furthest off with his predictions whilst Steph made arguably the best call that Sheffield United would go up. Chris Wilders’ side were unfancied by many, but not by Stephan Roux!

Premier League Top Scorer – Aubameyang, Mane & Salah (22)

John – Aubameyang (24)

Steph – Salah (30)

Daniel – Kane (25)

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang could have finished as outright top scorer if he hadn’t shanked a good chance wide in the closing stages of his team’s final game of the season. Despite that miss John was eerily close with his prediction of 24 goals for the Arsenal forward.

Steph got the name of one of the top scorers right but perhaps expected a bit more from Liverpool’s Egyptian forward. Daniel couldn’t have foreseen the injuries that plagued Harry Kane and ultimately ruined his prediction.

Huddersfield Town’s Top Scorer – Grant (4)

John – Diakhaby (13)

Steph – Depoitre (15)

Daniel – Mounie (12)

It’s hard to figure out who made the worst prediction here, Steph or John? Both of their picks failed to find the back of the net in the league all season… Daniel was the closest with his prediction although Mounie ended up scoring 10 less goals than Daniel thought he would…

Considering Karlan Grant started the season at Charlton none of the team can be blamed for not picking him. Surprisingly enough, no one went for Town's second top scorer, Zanka...

First Premier League Manager Sacked – Slavisa Jokanovic, Fulham

John – Neil Warnock, Cardiff

Steph – Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds

Daniel – Maurizio Sarri, Chelsea

Not for the last time in these predictions Steph has revealed in a Freudian slip his obsession with Leeds United. As we understand Bielsa is still in charge at Leeds and they are still in the Championship.

John went with the easy option, the one that everyone was predicting whilst Daniel didn’t reckon Sarri would be much of a success at Chelsea. He was partially right as the Chelsea fans haven’t taken to him, but Sarri did deliver a third-placed finish, a League Cup final and a Europa League win.

FA Cup Winners – Manchester City

John – Huddersfield Town

Steph – Arsenal

Daniel – Arsenal

Of course Manchester City won the FA Cup, how could they not? The oil-rich billionaires dispatched Watford 6-0 in the final making a mockery of fair play. The big shock from the predictions is that John went for Town to lift the cup, unbelievable.

League Cup Winners – Manchester City

John – Arsenal

Steph – Manchester United

Daniel – Manchester City

FINALLY! One of our team picked the blindingly obvious choice, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. What was going on in John and Steph’s minds?

Champions League Winners – Liverpool

John – Juventus

Steph – Barcelona

Daniel – Juventus

2 of the team had a lot of faith in Cristiano Ronaldo but that was ultimately misplaced as his team fell to Ajax in the quarter-finals. Steph’s pick looked all set for a Champions League final before they blew a 3-0 first-leg lead at Anfield in the semi-final.

Europa League Winners – Chelsea

John – Arsenal

Steph – Burnley

Daniel – Arsenal

What is our team's fascination with Unai Emery and Arsenal? The Gunners won nothing this season despite the best wishes of Daniel and John. Although Arsenal did reach the final which is more than can be said for Steph’s choice…

Weirdest Moment – Ashley Barnes kisses Joe Bennett

John – Jamie Vardy to become player/manager at Leicester

Steph – Harry Redknapp to take over at Leeds for only the January transfer window

Daniel – Steve Mounie to score an overhead kick

Steph reveals more of his obsession with Leeds as he delved into the Championship for his weirdest moment of the Premier League season… John’s gone for a weird event that certainly didn’t happen but doesn’t remain out of the realms of possibility.

Daniel was devastated when he watched two Steve Mounie overhead kicks fail to hit the back of the net this season. Better luck next time Daniel!

Top Predictor… Daniel!

The prestigious ‘TerrierBlog Predictor of the Year’ award goes to Daniel this season after he successfully predicted 8 outcomes. Impressive stuff Daniel and certainly much more impressive than John who only got 5 outcomes right as well as predicting Town to win the FA Cup.

Despite his unhealthy fascination with Leeds United Steph managed to scoop 6 correct outcomes and will be happy to have avoided the wooden spoon. Who will win next season?
