Mark Skowron

Good morning Town fans and welcome to TerrierBlog for another edition of fan stories, this time with Mark Skowron who had the choice between supporting Leeds and Huddersfield as a child. Thankfully he made the right choice and he spoke to us recently to share his Huddersfield Town love story. Enjoy!

When did you first start supporting Huddersfield Town?

"I started supporting Huddersfield in the 93/94 season when I was eight. My first two seasons resulted in trips to Wembley: a defeat to Swansea on penalties in the Autoglass trophy final and promotion to what is now the Championship through the playoffs the following year."

Are you Huddersfield born and bred?

I" was brought up half way between Leeds and Huddersfield. It could all have gone horribly wrong!"

What made you become a Town fan? Pushy parents? Or was it just a love the club?

"I don’t think I liked football at all until my dad started taking me to Town matches. After that I quickly became hooked though."

Do you remember your first game? The result, the atmosphere or the overall experience?

"All I remember is that I didn’t see us lose for the first four or five games I went to. We played at the old Leeds Road Stadium in those days and a group of us kids would have our own match in the corner with a can for the ball and coats for the goals."

Apart from the obviously amazing last two years, what would you say has been your highlight of your time supporting Town?

"I would have to go with the 1995 playoff final mentioned earlier. 2-1 against Bristol Rovers with goals for Chris Billy and Andy Booth (and Marcus Stewart’s last goal before joining Town). I was starting to think it would never be topped but the last two years have been incredible."

Let’s just accept that David Wagner is the best manager Town have ever had (since Chapman), and I doubt you remember him! Who would you say has been the second best manager during your years supporting Huddersfield?

"Peter Jackson (with the assistance of Terry Yorath) for achieving the great escape of the 97/98 season. After the worst start in the club’s history and 14 matches without a win, nobody gave us a chance when he was appointed but we ended the season in 16th place."

Give us your favourite starting 11 made up of all the players you’ve seen in blue & white.

"Steve Harper (GK); Jack Hunt, Tom Cowan, Chris Schindler, Terence Kongolo; Ben Thornley, Elias Kachunga, Aaron Mooy, Jonathan Hogg, ; Marcus Stewart, Andy Booth"

What would you say makes Huddersfield’s fans and the club unique?

"The incredible atmosphere at home games, the great following away and the number of different songs we have. The connection between the club and fans is pretty special too."

Can you tell us your worst memory supporting Town?

"When we sold Marcus Stewart. I felt like that decision led to the club’s dramatic fall down the football league in the seasons that followed."

What one thing are you afraid of for the future of Huddersfield?

"Waking up to find the last two years were a dream!"

What would your dream season be?

"I always said I wanted one season in the Premier League and now we’re entering our second. Is doing a Leicester too much to ask?"
